Electricians
Annual earnings: $44,780
Percent growth: 7.4 percent
"We're talking about energy here. A lot of installations require the work of electricians," Shatkin said. Solar panels, transformers, and power grids at power plants are among these installations. "There are a lot of electronic controls and equipment that control" green technology, Shatkin said.

9. Carpenters
Annual earnings: $37,660
Percent growth: 10.3 percent
Carpenters are needed to implement green construction. They can use materials made from old materials or recycle those from rehabilitated buildings. They're also needed for newer project. "If you're putting solar panels on your roof, you might need to make some modifications," Shatkin said.

8. Geoscientists
Annual earnings: $75,800
Percent growth: 21.9 percent
"They're involved in the work that's needed to find sources of geothermal heat, from hot rock beds, rock formations," Shatkin said. Geoscientists also serve as consultants in projects, like a West Virginia coal plant's plans to bury emissions.

7. Plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters
Annual earnings: $44,090Percent growth: 10.6 percent
Plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters apply their skills to several green industries. They direct steam to create energy. They install and maintain piping at ethanol power plants, geothermal plants, and within solar and water heaters.

6. Environmental engineers
Annual earnings: $72,350
Percent growth: 25.4 percent
These engineers solve environmental concerns within various projects. For example, when a power plant in southern Virginia was relocated onto a wetland, environmental engineers created a new wetland in another area. "Still, the most important thing they do is deal with sewage disposal and other kinds of waste disposal because that has a huge impact on the environment," Shatkin said.

5. Construction and building inspectors
Annual earnings: $48,330
Percent growth: 18.2 percent
Construction and building inspectors are concerned with maintaining required codes. Increasingly, these codes concern the environment. "There are standards being written up now for green building, for energy efficiency, for use of renewable materials and for planting things around the area," Shatkin said.

4. Environmental scientists and specialists
Annual earnings: $58,380
Percent growth: 25.1 percent
"They're working for a greener world," Shatkin said. "Environmental scientists are dealing with environmental concerns and the impact that people have on the environment." These are the technicians that conduct research and help implement change.

3. First-line supervisors/managers of construction trades and extraction workers
Annual earnings: $55,950
Percent growth: 9.1 percent
"Again, construction is something where there can be greener practices," Shatkin said. These managers and first-line supervisors work with construction workers to ensure energy codes are maintained. Extraction work, which is generally not thought of as a green process, can be environmentally sound.

2. Industrial engineers
Annual earnings: $71,430
Percent growth: 20.3 percent
"Industrial engineers are efficiency experts, safety experts, and quality control experts," Shatkin said. They can apply these skills to any process, making it more green, more efficient, and more sustainable in terms of resource use.

1. Construction managers
Annual earnings: $76,230
Percent growth: 15.7 percent
"There's an increasing interest in making energy-efficient buildings, and making buildings using renewable materials," Shatkin said. "For example, you can use recyclable tires to make buildings: they last longer and don't end up in a dump somewhere." Construction managers lead this process.

Key Concepts Every Student Job Seeker Should Know

Read on to hear what you should and should not be doing in your job search. These insights come directly from HR recruiters and Career Services professionals nationwide.
- adapted from Brainstorm Consulting

Be flexible in your search in terms of geographic area.

Internships hold key to job offers.

Start small and shoot for the stars after you have been working awhile -- students have too many unrealistic expectations on where they will start and what their income will be.

Always follow up. This applies to thank you notes after interviews, checking in on the status of a resume submission, staying on the radar of a networking contact etc. Don't passively sit
back and wait for the offers to roll in!

A degree does not entitle you to a job. It is up to you to prove your value to an employer.

Social networking / media matters. Ex: Facebook, Linkedin.

Have a good understanding of the position (don't apply if you don't meet at least 75% of the qualifications or more) and the company. There was nothing worse than interviewing folks who had no idea of our mission.

Not sitting back and saying “I never heard anything back from ABC company!” Take responsibility and continue to make your interest known. Not enough students do that.

One of the things your future employer judges you on is whether or not
they want you representing the company. Take out your tongue ring, cover up
your tattoos, and clean up your FaceBook page. Your personal and
professional lives are almost certainly not as separate as you think.

Research the company/organization and individual(s) you are meeting with. Be prepared to
talk about yourself as a potential employee, your work and why you are a good fit for their company. Research and review news about your field and key employers so that you can add to discussions during interviews.

A resume needs to offer something significant to the employers needs - not
be a life history.

September Career Events

Law School Fair

Monday, September 21st

1 pm - 3 pm

Buffalo Niagara Marriott

Graduate and Professional School Fair

Tuesday, September 29th

11 am - 1 pm

Student Union

Not sure what to do once you get to the fairs? She researches and writes about job search strategy, career management, hiring trends and workplace issues.

Whether you're currently employed, facing a layoff or looking for a job, keeping your résumé up-to-date is always important. In today's economy, however, it's even more vital to have a current copy of your résumé on hand. After all, you never know when an amazing job opportunity -- or pink slip -- might fall into your hands.

"You have to be ready to submit your résumé on short notice," says Dustin DeVries, senior director of LEAD DAWG, a job search consulting firm. "Candidates who have taken time to update their résumé may be passed over for another candidate of similar caliber that is ready to go now. You just never know when that opportunity may land in your lap and you have to be ready to act."

Updating one's résumé today, however, may not be as easy as it once was. As job losses and layoffs continue to swell, people have to do more with less to enhance their résumés. Job seekers are unsure how to deal with lack of employment, gaps between work, title demotions, less duties and shortened job spans when updating their résumés.

Here are some ways to beef up your résumé if it is lacking in any of the following areas:
You have a gap between jobs:Depending on the length of the gap, Miriam Salpeter of Keppie Careers, says you should fill in the gap with something you've been doing in your time off. This will show employers you've taken initiative during this period rather than waiting for something to fall into your lap.

"Consider getting actively involved in volunteer projects and/or consulting opportunities, even if you do the work for free," Salpeter says. "This will allow you to use your skills in a way that is worth describing on your résumé."

You've been laid off:No employer will be surprised see an applicant who's been laid off. Be honest about your departure, DeVries says. "In this economy, it's going to happen. Don't misrepresent that you're still employed by dating your last position as 'to present' if you're not currently with that company. [It's a] red flag if a recruiter sees [you] as currently employed when in fact you've been laid off."

You were hired recently but laid off right away due to the economy:Don't leave any employment off your résumé, no matter how short a period you may have worked there. Just don't explain the details on your résumé.

"In today's economy, most people will give you the benefit of the doubt that your departure was not a result of your performance," Salpeter says. "Be prepared to discuss it if it comes up in a conversation or interview."

You were demoted or had a title change:Titles are just that -- a title. It says nothing about your specific accomplishments and your track record of meeting or exceeding metrics for your organization, DeVries says.

"State your title, but focus [on] your achievements for the organization. Any good recruiter or potential employer is going to be most interested in your track record of meeting objectives no matter what your role," DeVries says. "A 'director' of marketing for one company may require something completely different from a 'director' role at another company. Focus on your measurable accomplishments."

You went from a senior-level position to a "filler" position at lower level:In this situation, it's critical to include an objective that outlines what type of position you're looking for at the company where you're applying, DeVries says.

"If you have to take a 'filler' position between professional positions, you need to include the role but place your focus on the activities you have maintained during that time to remain current in your professional field," he says. Volunteering, professional networking and taking classes are all things that will help keep you current.

You're a recent college graduate with little experience:Most people have skills that they don't realize are important résumé builders, Salpeter says. DeVries agrees, saying that experience occurs any time you're gaining insight and perspective in your chosen field. Classes, volunteer experience, internships, leadership activities and professional networking groups are all examples of experience you can incorporate in your résumé.

Now that you know how to correct any potentially sketchy parts of your résumé, here are five tips for keeping it up-to-date.

1. Keep up with trends"Keep up-to-date with current trends for résumés and online profiles. Be sure that you are highlighting how you stand out and emphasizing what makes you special," Salpeter says.

2. Keep a brag bookDeVries suggests keeping a log of your performance reviews, coaching reports from managers, sales reports, goal assessments and the like to use as content for your résumé.
"You're going to be measured against someone else in most any position you may hold," he says. "Update this list each time you receive an e-mail from your manager or a report from your company. Include achievements applicable to the position to which you're submitting your résumé."
Additionally, Salpeter suggests keeping a file of any nice things that supervisors, clients and colleagues say about you, and asking for recommendations on social networking sites like LinkedIn.

3. List more than job duties"Listing job duties on your résumé is OK, but include the metrics you were held accountable for and your performance to those goals," DeVries says. "Many people just list the duty but don't include the scale of their accountability and how they performed."

4. Always ask for feedbackNever stop asking for feedback or critique from colleagues, friends and experts. "You never know what someone may see in your résumé that needs further enhancement or may just need to be eliminated," DeVries says.

5. Keep listsIn order to keep your résumé up-to-date, you need to keep a running list of your accomplishments and things you've done in the workplace, and add to it regularly, Salpeter says. Keep track of your digital profile, too, and recognize that your digital footprint is an important part of your professional presentation and job search.

Why and How You Should Consider a Green-Collar Job

If you are looking for a job, why not look for a green-collar job?
For more information about landing a green job no matter what your major is, check out this article found on the American Solar Energy Society website. If you are searching for student affairs positions in higher education, these three strategies will help you achieve your goals.

1. Online Search Engines
We all know how easy it is to access online resources. However, instead of limiting your search to websites which service all industries, such as Monster.com or Careerbuilder.com, visit websites that are focused specifically on job postings in higher education. Many universities and colleges post their job openings on The Chronicle of Higher Education: Chronicle Careers and Higher Ed Jobs. The Chronicle of Higher Education: Chronicle Careers allows you to browse by position type, discipline or field, location, institution name, or employer profile. You can refine your search by job category, position type, or location on Higher Ed Jobs. In addition to job postings, both sites offer useful articles pertaining to the job search process, as well as helpful tools such as salary surveys and cost of living comparisons. These websites will serve as a starting point, but they are only the initial tools to incorporate into your job search process.

2. Networking & Professional Organizations
The next step is networking within your discipline. So, what exactly is networking? Networking involves meeting people in your desired career field, informing them about your goals, accomplishments, and background, and gathering their valuable insight into the field. Within each discipline of student affairs there are associations that assist with the professional development of those entering the field and those seeking to advance in the field. The two biggest professional development organizations for the student affairs field are the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) and the American College Personnel Association (ACPA). The best way to network with the professionals in the field is to attend respective association meetings, seminars, and conferences. The annual conferences of professional organizations usually incorporate opportunities for universities to screen and interview candidates (search for Placement Exchange or Job Fairs on the professional organizations’ websites). Consider volunteering at a conference or event to increase your chances of networking with professionals and leaders in the field. Whatever field you are interested in, look for a specific professional organization that focuses on your career interests. Here are some professional organizations within student affairs:

American Association of University Women (AAUW) www.aauw.org
American College Health Association (ACHA) www.nodaweb.org

For more immediate local exposure to potential employers in student affairs, investigate regional consortium groups. Areas with multiple institutions have established organizations that provide networking opportunities as well as a forum for professionals to share best practice concepts.

3. Targeted School Websites
Make your search as thorough as possible by looking at the Human Resources websites of specific schools. There may be job openings that are not listed on the search engines or within the professional organizations, but are listed on the school’s Human Resources website. Create a “favorites” folder in your internet browser that will serve as a quick reference for your preferred institutions. Being able to quickly access these web pages can assist you in finding new positions on the Human Resources website as soon as they are posted. You will also have easy access to all of the information you need to craft an individualized cover letter and resume for that specific institution.

Application Process
You may notice that many institutions use similar software for the online job application process (usually the application form created by People Admin). Human Resource departments provide job seekers the opportunity to login, create an account, apply for multiple positions, and save application records in the system. The online application form is extensive. Once you have completed an application for one institution, save it and print it out. You can quickly refer to the information from the first application for future applications to other institutions. You can also create an account and application in many institutions’ Human Resources systems without actually applying for a job. So if you have a dream institution that you want to work for, or if you have prior knowledge that a job may be opening up in the future, you can upload your application information even before the job is posted.

Best of luck with your job search and application process! In a tough economy, fewer opportunities and more applicants makes the hunt that much more challenging. Whether you’re a college senior, recent grad, or seasoned employee suddenly faced with a lay-off, there are several steps you can take now to launch your job search.

Develop a job search plan. Setting realistic goals, timeframes, and expectations at the beginning will save you a lot of frustration in the long run. View a Job Search Video Workshop before jumping in headfirst.

Get your creative juices flowing. Effective job searching requires a multi-faceted approach, so don’t be afraid to think outside the box. Internet job sites and the local want ads are okay but non-traditional sources of information are often gold mines for job seekers. Check out newsletters, e-listservs, professional associations, social networking sites, blogs and more.

Go directly to the source. Companies are slashing their recruiting budgets left and right, so they may not have the funding to post opportunities on public job boards. Instead, visit their web pages or speak to an HR professional about open positions. Don’t know where to start? Utilize employer directories such as Career Search and develop a company list to target your research.

Know what employers want. Check out Career Services’ Employer Tips video series and get the inside scoop from a handful of recruiters on topics such as resume writing, cover letters, job searching, interviewing, and more.

Network! Nearly 65% of new hires report learning about open positions through other people. Attend structured networking events, such as Career Conversations, that foster connections between emerging professionals and industry veterans.

Widen your scope. If hiring is down in your field, consider how your transferrable skills, previous experience, and qualifications could be applied to other industries. Hiring freezes and cutbacks may mean fewer full-time positions, so don’t rule out part-time jobs, internships and volunteer experience. Getting your foot in the door will help to set you apart from other candidates when new opportunities arise.

Be proactive, be patient, and be flexible. Your job search may take longer than the average six months. Now, more than ever, it is necessary to take advantage of any potential job leads that come your way: career workshops, job fairs, professional mix-‘n-mingles, or leadership programs, among others.

Remain positive. Recession-talk is enough to make anyone nervous, but if you’re in the throws of a job search, a hopeful outlook is a must. Make an appointment with a career counselor to discuss your job search plan or join an online job seekers’ support group. Help Wanted: A Blog for Job Seekers is a new resource devoted to helping full and part-time job seekers.

by Emily Chabala, UB Career Services

Employer Visit

Employer in Residence Program

Bergmann Associates

Thursday, February 26, 2009

1 pm - 4:30 pm

259 Capen Hall

The Employer in Residence Program coordinated by the Career Services office brings representatives from top companies to campus for a half day or whole day visit. Everyone has a significant person in their past that helped them find success in their career. Networking is about meeting people who could turn out to be a significant person in your future career. People who are successful in their career typically want to help others who are “just starting out” because they know that someone helped them along the way. So don’t think you are “using” someone by networking. You are simply meeting people who may want to help you to achieve your goals.

What’s Your Problem?
If you want to find a job, figure out what problem or types of problems you would like to spend your time solving. It could be a social problem, health problem, mechanical problem, etc. Then find people and organizations who are also interested in solving these types of problems. Try to meet as many people as you can who currently work in or know people who work in those organizations. Don’t ask potential contacts or mentors to help you find a job. Instead, ask them about their work and organization and listen for ways that you could be of help to them. Show them how you could be of value to them in solving their problem.

Timing is Everything!
There is typically a time gap, anywhere from a month to a year between the time when an organization either conceives of the idea for a new job or realizes that an existing job will soon be available and the time when that position is actually advertised to the public. The goal of networking is about making yourself known to an individual or organization so that they consider you for the position before it is even advertised. Networking will increase your chances of being thought of when someone in the organization that is hiring asks the question: “Does anyone know someone who would be good for this job…?”

Hey,Wanna Buy a Used Car?
Finding a job or internship is similar to finding a good used car to buy. You probably won’t find a really good used car at a dealer or on a website or in the newspaper. You find a really good used car by telling everyone you know that you are looking for a used car. Sooner or later, someone that you tell will know someone who is trying to get rid of a good used car. So tell everyone you know about the type of job or internship that you are looking for and sooner or later, someone who is hiring will hear about you.

Falling in Love with Your Job or Career
Finding your dream job or a career is kind of like finding your spouse or soul mate. Nobody just all of a sudden says, “I’m going to marry and spend the rest of my life with….um…um … that person over there” and then decides to marry them. “Love at first sight” typically only happens in the movies. In the real world, the process typically goes like this. We will, by some chance occurrence, meet someone, go on dates to learn more about them, fall in love, and before we know it, we have found “the one” we might spend the rest of our life with. It is not so much a decision that we make, as it is something that happens to us over time. Unless it’s an arranged marriage (or an arranged major or career), you will have to spend some time with a person before you can know if they are “the one” for you. Likewise with finding your major, career or even a job, you may have to spend some time with it to see if it is something that you will enjoy doing. In the same way people typically don’t end up marrying the first person they date, you may not end up staying with the same major, job or career.

Just Do Something!
If the key to finding a job is meeting the right people, then what is the key to meeting the right people? It all starts with some type of random, chance occurrence. Ask anyone how they met their significant other and they will tell you a story about how they went to a certain party or took a certain class or walked into a certain store, and that specific action, down the road, led to them meeting the person of their dreams. So, if you want to meet the people who will help you find your job, you have to do things that will bring you into contact with new people and new ideas. Just do things; get involved in something, volunteer for something, have people you know introduce you to people they know, go to places where people are who share your interests and values. Talk to people in different jobs and careers that may interest you. Get involved in campus activities, student clubs and community service opportunities. Approach someone who works in your field of interest and ask how you could help them on a project or upcoming event. The only way to discover what it is you really want to do is to just do something. Keep moving forward and before you know it your dream job will find you.

More Networking
